Located in the heart of the Toulouse – Montpellier – Barcelona triangle, the region where Hamilton Immo operates is one of the most diversified of the whole of the South of France : to the South of this region are the Pyrénées, to the North the Montagne Noire, to the East the Mediterranean sea and the city of Toulouse to the West.
It is very well know for its vineyards and AOC wines (Corbières, Minervois, Fitou, Saint Chinian, Cabardès, La Livinière, …) but also for its many historical sites: the medieval city of Carcassonne, the Cathars Castles, the Canal du Midi etc… In addition to that, there are many trails available for hiking, cycling, riding or simply boating.
The region is within very easy access thanks to regular flights to and from Toulouse, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Montpellier, Nimes and Bézier airports. You can also take the train as it is situated on the main line between Bordeaux and Marseille while the TGV line Paris ??? Montpellier will take you there in under 3 and half hours. The main motorways A61, A9 & A75 also allow for easy access to this wonderful area.
It is also very near Spain with Barcelona and the Cost Brava within 3 hours, Andorra and its many ski resorts are only 2h30 away and of course the many French ski resorts in the French Pyrénées: Font-Romeu, Les Angles and Ax-Bonascre
In the Heart of this Region : Carcassonne, a World Heritage city.
Carcassonne has over 2000 years history to share : in 1996 the Unesco lists the Canal du Midi as World Heritage and in 1997 it is the city of Carcassonne itself that receives this label.
Carcassonne is at the crossroads of 2 major routes used since the Roman Times : the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean Coast and Spain to the Massif Central.
The City of Carcassonne has two distinct areas : the medieval city situated on top of the hill on the right bank of the river Aude. The Bastide Saint Louis covers the left bank, with the Trivalle quarter and its famous Pont Vieux (old Bridge) creating a link between both.
Highlights of the Region
Our region has kept very vivid traces of its glorious past : fortified farm houses (Bastides), Cathar Houses, Cathar Castles and many other landmark features.
The Canal du Midi, a gigantic construction project was opened in Mai 1861 and is today a unique tourist attraction, and is recognised by the Unesco as World Heritage.
The Medieval City of Carcassonne, one of the only cities in Europe still in immaculate condition is the second most visited site in France after the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The region’s heritage, particularly left by its heavy Cathar past adds an interesting dimension : Good versus Evil are one of the pillars of this religion which remained strong in this area for over two centuries. Pope Innocent III was determined to eradicate the heretics and in 1209 a crusade led by the fearsome Simon de Montfort was launched.
Today, there are many outdoor markets and flee markets in this region : among the most popular Carcassonne on Saturday Mornings, Mirepoix on Monday Mornings and Bram on Wednesdays.
